About
At Walking Mountains Science Center we provide locals and visitors from pre-k to gray with opportunities to explore nature, gain a scientific understanding, and learn about the many wonders of our mountain environment through natural science and sustainability programs.
We envision a future where everyone in the community understands the science of nature and is inspired to take action as an environmental steward.
Why we're Green
Challenges we experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic included reduced opportunity to divert hard-to-recycle materials. Soft plastics were no longer collected at drop-site stations throughout Eagle County for about one year during the pandemic to help reduce employee exposure to contracting Coronavirus during the sorting process.
During this time, our Green Team found another diversion program to help make-up for this loss in diverted materials: recycling snack wrappers. While the materials being diverted were different, this helped increase our diversion rate long-term. Now that we can divert soft plastics again and have sustained collection and diversion of snack wrappers, we have significantly increased our hard-to-recycle diversion and have involved a new audience which had not been engaged with us in this way prior to the pandemic. This challenge turned into quite the opportunity- we are now working on building a partnership with the nation-wide diversion giant, TerraCycle.
